#CNAconf2013 – Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission

Sponsor Spotlight

CNSC

Background

Description
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) is Canada’s nuclear regulator. The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect the health, safety and security of Canadians and the environment; and to implement Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The CNSC also has a legislated mandate to disseminate objective and scientific information to the public.

Accomplishments in 2012
In 2012, the CNSC was busy as we finalized the Fukushima Task Force Action Plan, concluded negotiations on implementing arrangements to the Nuclear Cooperation Agreement with India, and conducted some significant hearings on Matoush, Point Lepreau, Port Hope and Darlington among others.  There is still however, very important work ahead of us.

Looking Ahead
2013 promises to be just as challenging and will be a busy year for the CNSC. The beginning of next steps following the Quebec Government’s shutdown of Gentilly-2, as well as the Pickering license renewal will occupy our efforts.

We will also play host to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Conference on Effective Nuclear Regulatory Systems in Ottawa from April 8 to 12, 2013.This international conference will evaluate and assess ways of further improving the effectiveness of regulatory systems for facilities and activities, taking into account lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident.

As the nuclear landscape continues to change the CNSC will continue to ensure our regulatory framework remains flexible and stays ahead of the curve.

Last Words
The CNSC will never compromise nuclear safety.
